The Quick Homebirth of Ruth.

In the early morning of August 25th, the day before my 30th birthday, my phone rang and buzzed and flashed. “Hello?” - “Hey Dannielle, it’s Chelsea, I’m in labor.” My 37 week, Fort Polk home birth mama, was in labor and I could tell by the sound of her voice that she was already in the thick of it, things must be moving quickly. I hopped up out of bed, got dressed, made sure everything was in my camera bag, and double checked again just in case, and headed out the door. Chelsea doesn’t live far from me at all, we just live a neighborhood a way from each other but from the sound of her voice on the phone I knew I needed to go now. When I arrived to her house I found her on the floor leaning over her bed during a contraction, her husband applying counter pressure for her, as her youngest stood near by and her oldest asleep in his room. The room she labored in was peaceful and dark, lit only by the light of the bathroom. I asked if they had called the midwife yet and they said both were on their way. Through each contraction I could tell things were becoming more intense. About 45min after I arrived Sarah, the assistant midwife, walked through the door. Chelsea had wanted to give birth in the birth pool so Sarah started getting everything out of their birth kit and setting it up. She had to stop a few times though to support mama through contractions. Chelsea decided she needed to go to the bathroom and had a good contraction while sitting on the toilet. She got up and started to walk back into the bedroom and a contraction stopped her in her tracks. Sarah went to her and held her up through a very long and powerful contraction. She got back over to the edge of the bed to labor on the floor leaning over it again. Another powerful contraction came on and Sarah again went to her side to support her, this time though her water broke! Chelsea went through another contraction and this time calm and collectedly she says “what is that? is she coming out?”. Sarah went to look and realized mama still had her underwear on. As she went to pull them down Chelsea says “She’s coming, that’s her head, her head is coming out.” They get mamas underwear halfway off and babies head comes out, and then out comes baby! No time for the pool to even be blown up let alone filled and used! Baby was born right there on the floor as mama kneeled over the bed. What an amazing and quick birth! Little Ruth was so perfect and covered in just a little bit of birthday frosting. We got mama and baby into bed together and placenta came shortly after, all on it’s own. Not long after the placenta was delivered in walked Midwife Nicki just missing the whole thing! Mama and baby snuggled a bit longer together and then the cord was cut and Ruth got all of her checks done by Nicki as the sun rose outside. It was an honor to work next to these two women and watch them do their job so lovingly. Everything was on mama and babies time, there was no rushing from anyone else, there was no poking or prodding of mama and baby. Chelseas husband and kids came in to meet baby after everything was cleaned up and mama and baby were comfortable in bed.

Such a beautiful birth for this family and I’m happy to have been apart of it.
