I think I loathed outdoor sessions because I hated the way they looked. Everyone always made such a big deal about chasing the sunset, shoot at golden hour, only shoot at golden hour, sun flares, warm photos ... on and on and on. I hated it, so I stopped.
Then there was family sessions..and I hated those too. People showed up in the most matchiest outfits ever, or colors that were SO HARD to edit and I was just not having a good time when it came time to sit down and edit.
So I stopped it all. Until now...and here's what I've learned.
I don't have to shoot at golden hour, and when I do I don't have to include the sun or the flares. It's okay to shoot on those dark and dreary days and love the crap out of it. I found that it's totally my style to shoot on overcast moody days. I LOVE IT! I'm not a warm golden hour sunset photographer and THAT IS OKAY! My ideal clients will come for the style I'm going for and like and enjoy shooting. If people inquire that want another style, guess what....it's okay to point them to another photographer because guess what, not everyone is my client and THAT IS OKAY!
It's okay to want to style your clients. It's okay to have a certain look you're going for and prefer to shoot and edit. People will and do inquire that already have their outfits in mind that are 100% not my style and guess what, I can point them to another photographer and THAT IS OKAY! Not.everyone.is.my.client!
There are plenty of photographers out there. I do not have to take on every client that inquires with me. My ideal clients are out there and they come to me because of my specific look and styling guide.
Not everyone is your client friends and it is okay. Be happy with your work, be excited to sit down and edit, be excited to deliver your work and show off your work. Stick to YOU and YOUR brand. Don't try and take every single client you can and don't try and be like everyone else just because it's "the thing".
<3 I'm currently loving and enjoying the work I'm doing again out here in Louisiana!
